To the editor:

How can a girl be motivated to explore her interests in science when she only sees boys on the robotics team at her school? Or how can she set in motion her dream of becoming a leader when opportunity seems like only a buzzword to her? The answer – Girl Scouts.

New Rochelle has a shortage of volunteers. We have a list of almost 100 girls waiting to get into a troop, but no volunteers to lead it. Unlike many other extracurricular activities where girls are coached or instructed, Girl Scouts provides a unique and safe environment for girls to make decisions for themselves, and to succeed and/or fail.

The latest study from the Girl Scout Research Institute reports that 97 percent of parents feel that Girl Scouting is a positive activity for their daughter. Ninety-six percent of girls have tried new things in Girl Scouts, and 94 percent of parents believe that their daughters feel special and important in Girl Scouting.

Girl Scouts has had one of the largest volunteer base of any organization for more than 103 years. Our volunteers are mothers, fathers, grandparents, aunts, college students, young professionals, retirees, and everyone in between. While our volunteers come from various ages and stages of life, research shows they all agree on the impact they make.

Ninety-five percent of Girl Scout volunteers agree that they make a difference in the lives of girls because they volunteer with Girl Scouts, 94 percent have made new friends themselves in Girl Scouting, and 92 percent feel that Girl Scouts helps them learn or share something new. Now it's my turn to invite you to join us.

Become part of this nationwide movement to empower girls. We need your help. Please join us at our recruitment event from 7-8:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 29 at New Rochelle Girl Scout House, 971 North Avenue, New Rochelle, contact Ahesha James at ajames@girlscoutshh.org, or call 914-747-3080 ext. 725.
